Every Thalassa piece begins long before it reaches New York. It begins in a family-owned workshop, where the work is done by hand and the knowledge has often been passed down from one generation to the next.
These workshops are the quiet backbone of fine craftsmanship. They are also, increasingly, under threat. Fast fashion has changed what many people expect to pay for the things they wear, and how quickly they expect to replace them. Mass-produced goods arrive cheaply and in enormous volume. A workshop that makes things carefully, by hand, cannot compete on those terms, and it was never meant to.
The result has been hard to watch. Some family workshops have been forced to close. Others have turned their workshop spaces into Airbnbs, simply to keep going. Each closure means more than an empty room. It means a set of skills that may not be practised again, and a way of making things that slowly disappears.

Why Thalassa exists
Thalassa NYC was founded by Sheena Malik to give that work a home. We bring brand-new, European-sourced furs and handmade leather goods to New York, and we present them to clients who care about how something is made as much as how it looks.
We select each piece for its craftsmanship and its character. We would rather offer fewer pieces, chosen with care, than chase volume. That is the whole point.

What choosing handmade means
When you choose a handmade piece, you are choosing something built to last rather than built to be replaced. You are also supporting the hands that made it, and helping a workshop keep its doors open and its craft in practice.
Natural materials and handmade finishes also mean that no two pieces are exactly alike. Small variations in colour, grain and texture are not flaws. They are the signature of work done by hand.

Looking ahead
We see Thalassa as a bridge between the workshops that make these pieces and the people who will wear and treasure them for years. Every purchase, every private appointment and every evening we host is part of keeping that bridge open.
Thank you for being part of it. To see the pieces in person, request a private appointment, or follow along on Instagram and TikTok at @thalassa__nyc.
