A well-made leather piece is meant to be lived with. With a little care, it will age gracefully and stay with you for years. These are general guidelines; for anything specific, it is always worth asking a professional.
Store it thoughtfully
When you are not using your bag, keep it in its dust bag and lightly stuff it with acid-free tissue so it holds its shape. Store it upright, in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat sources, which can fade colour and dry out leather. Avoid plastic bags or airtight boxes. Leather is a natural material and needs to breathe; trapped moisture can lead to mildew.
Keep it clean
For everyday care, a soft, dry cloth is usually all you need. Wipe away dust and light marks gently. If you want to use a leather cleaner, choose one made for the type of leather you own, and always test it on a small, hidden area first. Avoid household cleaners, alcohol, baby wipes and anything abrasive.
Condition from time to time
Over time, leather can lose some of its natural oils. A suitable conditioner, applied sparingly every few months or when the leather begins to feel dry, helps keep it supple and prevents cracking. Again, test first, apply with a soft cloth and let it absorb fully before use.
If it gets wet
Rain happens. Blot the surface gently with a soft, absorbent cloth; don't rub. Stuff the bag with tissue to help it keep its shape, then let it dry naturally at room temperature. Never use a hair dryer, radiator or direct sunlight to speed things up, as heat can warp and stiffen leather.
Mind what it touches
Light-coloured leather can pick up colour from dark denim and other dyed fabrics. Hand creams, perfume and oils can also mark leather, so let them dry before handling your bag. Keep pens capped and sharp objects away from the interior.
Hair-on-hide pieces
Hair-on-hide needs a slightly different touch. Brush it lightly in the direction of the hair with a soft brush, keep it away from moisture, and avoid conditioners or cleaners on the hair side.
Embrace the character
Handmade leather is not meant to stay exactly as it was on the first day. A soft patina, gentle creasing and subtle changes in tone are part of its beauty, and part of the story of the life you give it.
